I love the quote from Huges in that article, "The notion of having a high-quality operating system that is, for all practical purposes, free, is very attractive in Asia," - yeah just like bootleg DVDs, music, and other normally protected property.

that's great news. however, home brew hardware companies in China are using MTK integrated cellphone motherboard which has... everything! bluetooth, wifi, audio/video, A2DP, GPS. all you need to do is slap in ur own cellphone cover and sell it. the cost of those boards? around $20... and the OS comes with it. so not sure, lots of competitions of course.

And not to forget the neighboring India with its billion plus population too...

The cell phone market in India is free from grip hold of carriers. People don't buy handsets from carriers, rather from handset manufacturer outlet itself. Carriers' contract model doesn't work here. We enjoy the freedom of switching carriers every few months based on rate cuts due to intense competition among carriers.

So Apple's model of tying down customers to 2-3 years contract is going to take quite a beating in India. Heck, for all I know, Indians (on an average) change their carriers at least 3-4 times in a 2 year period.

So increase the android's sales projection by few more millions!!!
