What concerns me is that Apple could easily appropriate an idea. That is, see an application it likes, refuse it, and then come out with its own.

There's nothing to stop them except their integrity...

Have a look at TuneWiki for an illustration of the differences. Google pay them $300K and say thanks, welcome aboard. Apple prevent you from running it unless you want to jailbreak your iPhone.

Does this really look any different than previous leaked photos? We can see the device from different angles, in someone's hands, and in a sunlit environment. But the device itself seems more polished, really?

the new pic doesn't have any branding on the front.... just some weired no. "HT828QZ000..." at the bottom.... I think it is a protype.. but seems so much more polished than the previous leaks.... If this protype can look this good then i've high hopes for the real Dream....

Seriously, what makes you think that it is not possible with android.... Your app for android will run on dozens of different models not just one phone... That developer would already be sharpening his skills with android SDK , thinking " Holly, molly!!! If one phone can bring me this much what can dozens of phones do for me?" He will laugh all the way to the bank. If anything, your e.g. is all the more reason to code for android.

I've always disliked Apple and its products because of their "walled Garden" philosophy.It puts me off completely.There is nothing like giving the consumer the opportunity to make their own choice.Android is the best thing that has happened this year to the mobile industry.I cant wait to get the G1 and play with.I only hope its release in the UK is not delayed.

That's one thing i like about Google. They are not afraid of competition. If some other competing app wins against their own, they concentrate their resources on improving their offering rather than stiffling the competition. Recently they released an android app for flicker rather than their own competing product picasa... that shows, for them consumer's choice comes first.

Apple is much worse than MS in this aspect. Thank God they are not market leaders or the innovation would be dead.
