Sprint’s Timely ‘Instinct’ in Delaying the HTC Touch Pro

21

Being a Sprint customer and a longtime Windows Mobile guy – I long for a handset from either Sprint or Verizon that is more hardware capable and less functionally flawed as the HTC G1 “Dream”.

I have eagerly awaited the upgrade from the newly invigorated Sprint on October 19th, to the HTC Touch Pro. Such a beautiful and functional device with it’s Five-row QWERTY keyboard, 4G, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with xenon flash, WiFi, Integrated GPS and TV out, I figured that it would/will get me through until a similar device is offered for the Android platform. Alas, through a contact at Sprint – I have learned that the release of the HTC Pro is being delayed – with no future release date yet announced – until certain software issues have been solved.

My source at Sprint stated that in spite of the success of the Instinct and the resultant problems with timely and necessary ROM fixes to an initially flawed handset, Sprint is determined not to make the same mistake with the HTC Touch Pro – which will become their top-of-the-line WinMo business and enterprise handset.

Those of us who are patiently waiting for a similar business offering in the Android OS/Hardware environment – who also happen to be parked at Sprint are both happy and sad to hear of the delay. Happy that Sprint is determined to do something else right (like their new “Everything” data plans, Ready Now program, and improved *cough* Customer Service) and sad at the delay in receiving the new device.

Waiting for the right handset can be a b*#ch ya know?

  1. Iv been told by our sprint rep that the date was pushed back to Nov 2nd. we will see, i have been waiting for it.

  2. Yea – I have been waiting for this phone since July ’08 – and now that the said release date has come and gone I am more antsy than ever! There have been so many dates announced on the net that its been a bit frustraiting. I have a feeling that t-Mobile may release their Fuze before Sprint releases the Pro. That’s gonna hurt.

  3. Jay,
    What are your thoughts on Sprint (cdma) vs. AT&T(gsm)? I’ve been with Sprint for 11 years and have had great luck with the few times I have had to interact with CS. But, I am looking at stats and I see that the Touch Pro on AT&T gets 420 minutes of talk time (7 hours) but only 225 minutes (3.75 hours) on Sprint. I understand the Sprint Network is the fastest and AT&T 3G only works with phones that are 3G certified but do you think there would be a patch to the Touch Pro in the future to all 3G or is that a hardware/chipset upgrade?
    I have a Treo 755p and it is zippy on Sprint’s network but I hate having to recharge it after a 2 hour conference call when it is down to 1 bar on the battery graph.I would appreciate the longer talk time and worrying less about charging but how bid of a difference it the network speed?

  4. Donald;

    AT&T is having great difficulty building out its 3G network on a nationwide basis – mostly because of the crappy low-profit deal they worked with Apple in order get the “exclusive on the iPhone.

    If you browse the Blogs like I do, most everyone who uses the supposed high-speed HSPDA network is very, VERY disappointed with the coverage, speed and reliability of the data network. This is AT&T’s and iphones “dirty little secret”.

    Sprint will quickly solve any problems with talk time and battery power – the stats I have seen on the HTC Touch Pro that is going to be offered by Sprint say that they are working on this problem now and may indeed be one of the reasons for the delay.

    Verizon’s Network speed is generally good as is Sprints’ speed. For me personally I would move to AT&T and get their upcoming Samsung Omnia were it not for their crappy Data network.

    Hope this helps,

  5. I have been waiting for this phone for too long, and now this delay may be the straw that breaks my association with Sprint. There are alot of other carriers with great phones, and if Sprint can’t get similar phones in a timely fashion, perhaps it’s time for me to move on. It’s too bad, I WANT sprint to succeed, but this is just one more tick on the “time to leave Sprint” column.

    It wouldn’t have bothered as much if they hadn’t led us to believe it would be the 19th, only to push it back at the last possible moment. GRRRRR

  6. I have actually been extremely impressed with how fast T-Mobile’s EDGE data speeds are on the G1. Even though it is technically on an identical data connection, web sites load easily ten times faster than they did on my Dash. It’s not quite as fast as my cable modem at home, but it is definitely in the same ballpark. I don’t have any problem waiting ten to twenty seconds for a large webpage to load.

  7. How can you possibly wait 10 to 20 seconds? That’s ridiculous! If a web page hasn’t loaded in less than a second, chances are, I’ve already moved on. And what if you’re being a bad driver and checking your email while driving?! 10 to 20 seconds is a LONG time to keep your eyes off the road!

  8. Jay,

    I too am patiently waiting for this phone. I have been a Sprint customer for 10 years and I have had it with my blackberry pearl. Sprint has replaced it 4 times since Jan. I am eager to get my hands on this HTC Touch Pro. Seems like a great phone and I will not need to use my Ipaq.
    Question, with all my research, I can’t tell if this phone supports voice command. Would you happen to know.
    Right now I am using the Instinct (which is going back as soon as the return kit comes in)-didn’t know I couldn’t sync outlook with it.
    It has a wonderful feature where I can hear who is calling through my bluetooth. I hope the touch pro has that same feature.

  9. Seriously dude, remove that blinking ‘Subscribe’ at the top left. Do you think you can persuade me to subscribe by blinking that think and making the RSS icon sinfully big??
    If I really wanna subscribe, I’ll search for it – but I wouldn’t want be distracted by an animated text while I’m trying to read the content.

  10. Jazzi;

    The HTC Touch pro will be available this Sunday Oct. 26. The phone is Windows Mobile 6.1 and definitely supports Voice Command. There is an internal Hardware Voice command – but I recommend Microsoft Voice Command V6. It works beautifully with WinMo 6. Microsoft Voice Command will announce your callers through your Bluetooth by whatever name by which they are designated in your address book. For WinMo I highly recommend the address book/Contact replacement App called “Pocket Informant” great App, still works with MS Voice Command in the Bluetooth!

  11. Thanks Jay for your response. Were did you get the date of 10/26. I heard it is going to be 11/2. Who knows….I am patiently waiting. Then I have to wait another couple of days for the rep to send me the phone.

    Thanks for the info.

  12. Well, I called Sprint to see if the 10/26 date held….the person I spoke to said it’s not available yet, and couldn’t give me a definite date other than “very very soon”. I guess I can hang until the end of the week, but anything past that will likely push me to another carrier. 🙁

  13. Um…it’s 10/26 and I see no availability for touch pro 🙁

    Steven_D
    I got the 10/26 date from my contact at Sprint. Trust me. You can order the phone from Telesales starting Sunday. Or, some of the more forward-thinking Sprint Franchises will have the Touch Pro phones overnighted and ready to go at the Franchise location on Sunday.

  14. Looks like it’s going to be 11/2 before the touch pro comes out unless you find a best buy that has one. A few people have purchased them from Best Buy today. That seems so backwards that Sprint will have a phone available at a retailer before they have it. One more week to go.

  15. Well, the 19th came and went….no Touch Pro. The 26th is here, but unless I want to buy it from Best Buy or such, I’m outta luck apparently. So now I’ll wait until 11/2. Pardon me if I don’t feel particularly optimistic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m on another carrier on 11/3.

  16. Well, it is here finally!!! The HTC Touch Pro was released today by Sprint. It is a cool looking phone. Hope everyone that wants one will get one.
