Garmin: Yeah, We Have an Android Phone Coming – No, It’s Not the Nuvifone

The much delayed and anticipated Nuvifone from Garmin is still on track for a 2009 release.  Unfortunately, it won’t be running Android as the OS.  It was rumored that the reason for all of the delays was that Garmin was taking second looks at the platform.  It might be easier to take Android and meld it to your preference than say, creating your own blend from Linux.

Officially, we heard today that Garmin plans to ship the Nuvifone with their own version of Linux as the operating system.  So much for the Android rumors, right?  Wrong.

“We do have an Android-based phone under development; however, we are not releasing any additional information about that product at this time.”

That’s what we wanted to hear all along.  It doesn’t matter what name you call it, we want to see it.  Hopefully it stays on the same route (see what we did there?) as the Nuvi prototypes that have been making their rounds for the better part of the year.
