Google Turns G1 into a Kindle of Sorts

The official Google Mobile blog announced yesterday that Android handsets now have the capability of pulling up over 1.5 million books through a mobile version of the Google Book Search.  This is the same Google Book search that has been around for years, but now the results are optimized for Android devices.

Also available in iPhone format, the search brings up books which have been scanned with a highly sophisticated version of optical character recognition (OCR) software.  Check your flatbed scanner out, it probably has OCR software, albeit an extremely lower grade.  Anyways, the books are formatted to fit small screens like the G1 and can be accessed anywhere you are.

Point your web browser to http://books.google.com/m and get started!  For more information on the OCR software and how it was used, check out the Inside Google Book blog.
