Android Around the World: China Getting HTC OPhone

china_mobileAndroid is about to land in a big way.  China Mobile, home to over 415 million subscribers, will soon be offering Android-based handsets.  The founding member of the Open Handset Alliance is expected to carry a modified version of the HTC Magic.

Called the OPhone due to it’s open nature, the Wall Street Journal reports (subscription) that the handset will be customized with software from wireless carrier China Mobile. They recently announced their own apps store, so it’s likely they’ll brand that in there alongside proprietary apps.

This could be exactly what HTC and Android need to gain mass appeal.  Last year there were 800,000 HTC devices sold so it’s a no-brainer to think there could be millions of Android phones sold. China Mobile is not the only carrier offering Android either.  Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO said they may also end up with China Telecom and China Unicom.

No official price has been given yet, but it’s rumored to be around $730 US or 5,000 yuan.
