LG Formally Announces LG-GW620 as First Android Handset

LG_GW620_002Hot on the heels of last week’s leak comes the official announcement of LG’s first Android handset. Called the LG-GW620, it’s a slide out QWERTY with a 3″ touch screen. The press release tells us little about the handset other than it is part of a larger strategy from LG. From the sounds of it, they plan to use Android to appeal to younger users and keep pumping out plenty of WinMo devices for the adult crowd.

The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience. Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead. – Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications

From last week’s leak, other specs are purported to be a 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and USB. Come on LG, you can’t just announce a new handset and not give us the details!

We are still in the dark on release dates and carrier availability.  The best we get from the press release is “…the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets.”   Rest assured we’ll be among the first to share it with you as the puzzle pieces start coming together.

It's getting to be another week another similarily specced Android phone…. how many of those processors did Qualcomm sell?! Yes this and the Cliq have slide out QWERTY's but the platform needs a 'next gen' phone with Tegra, QWERTY. OLED, HD out, etc. and it needs it soon to muscle in on the additional (over and above phone) game/pmp market share that the iPhone is enjoying

Oh yeah… it seems that Qualcomm made a buy one get 10 offer 2 years ago.

The qwerty on the LG looks amazing (if it weren't for the lack of a CliQ-esque directional pad), but the screen is just TOO SMALL… way too small.

The standard of phones we're hearing about for the "going back to school" season makes me believe carriers are saving their TEGRAs for Christmas…. which is a bit too late considering Tegra 2 (4x faster) will show up in devices in Spring 2010, according to NVIDIA.
