Google has no issue with users creating custom roms, they just don't want users distributing official Google apps (gmail, maps, etc) in the custom roms. So what's the big deal? Nothing. It's a hell of a lot more open than the Iphone, and imho way cooler. The Iphone bores me.

Ahahahaha yeah, because iPhone never let anyone down. It's also so reasonably priced! Oh man and don't you just love bending over to AT&T to get one? Android will eat up iPhone worldwide without a shadow of doubt. iPhone will probably still be a big deal in the states for a while, simply because of how much extra money people have here.

"Having a lot of devices out there but dealing with poor quality apps"
A lot of device = choice. Choice is good.
poor quality apps: that's right, therere are only good apps in the Apple Store.

"tons of limitations (still no paid apps in most countries worlwide)"
This is something that will change over time.
The tons of limitations in the Apple store however will never change (Apple deciding which apps you are able to install)

"Pretending to do an open-source OS but as soon as good modders create alternate ROMs with Google applications (which are free) leading to C&D letters..."
The OS _IS_ open source, some apps are not. And it doesn't have anything to do with the apps being free for the customers.

"I know many Android programmers who are now leaving this platform and switching to iPhone as they feel completely let down by Google."
Yes, because going to a completely closed down and restrictive platform like the iPhone because of a couple of closed apps really makes sense in that regard.
The whole Cyanogen issued was blown way out of proportion. Plus, how does it even affect app developers at all?

+1. I code for Android, I suffer from dismal sales but I will not go iPhone. I genuinely don't like it and bad sales are due to bad business model. AM sure needs an improvement and most of all - website (sorry Cyrket) but I hope mighty Google will throw some real resources at improving it

Funny, I know many iPhone programmers leaving the platform and moving over to Android. I also know many Android programmers who do not care about the C&D letter at all.

And what makes you think Google Apps for Android are free?

I was upset too about the whole cyanogen thing but I don't get the continued hatred by some people its still a great platform (I would say best but I am biased). And it worked out in the end

Yeah, well I think Eric is a bit optimistic. Having a lot of devices out there but dealing with poor quality apps and a stupid Android Market with tons of limitations (still no paid apps in most countries worlwide) which furthermore makes the copying of copy-protected applications an easy job, I don't see what is going to explode. Pretending to do an open-source OS but as soon as good modders create alternate ROMs with Google applications (which are free) leading to C&D letters....
