Motorola Calgary (Verizon’s Second Android Phone) in the Wild

motorola_calgary_01Here we go again.  The Boy Genius Report has the first “in the wild” shots of the Motorola Calgary handset, headed for Verizon.  Presumed to be arriving later this year, the phone looks very much like a less expensive, little brother to the Droid. Like T-Mobile’s CLIQ, this handset will have MOTOBLUR as the user interface.

We have to admit that we’re not big fans of the keyboard.  What appears very cheap and basic has plenty of wasted space.  Let’s hope this is not the finished product.  On the other hand, this could be the kind of sacrifice needed in order to bring about sub-$100 Android phones.  There is no indication as the price or launch date but you can bet it’s right around the corner.

A few specs gathered by BGR include:

  • Three touch-sensitive Android keys on the display
  • Optical joystick
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • GPS, accelerometer, WiFi, microSD card slot
  • Spring-assisted slider

I agree, although this phone is a combination of plastic and metal (it looks like it's entirely plastic in the picture).

      Still, leaves me wanting more…

So that's the danger – putting Android on bad or ugly hardware.

It looks way to cheap and crapy! If anything they should offer it free with no contract to get people intrested in android.

THAT would be marketing genius! We need a free phone and if the pictures are any indication this phone is worth just about that much :)

Wow. I so unimpressed. I've been waiting soooo long — as a *very* loyal Verizon customer —for a *phone* that would help me with my iPhone envy. This phone is ugly. Keyboard? Puhhhlease.

Give me something simple. This is a giant step *backward* as far as I am concerned. I'm am willing to try *something* besides an actual iPhone to replace my RAZR *phone,* but this "phone" is *not* it.

The best OS (which remains to be seen) can *not* make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear." This phone (and any other over-complicated, keyboard-bearing POS) is a Sow's Ear. Period.
