I can't even get it to load up. It scrolls through a screen saying: File name > wrong image, File name > no image… etc.

It goes too quick to know what they're all titled but…

Hi I ran into a very serious problem that we I tried to update my Magic with the update software from Rogers site I got stuck at 81% for more than 1 hour. And I tried the approach from above with volume down and power buttons press and hold it just brings me to a white screen with message:
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32A SHIP S-OFF H

and it doesn't show any option for picking up file from SAPPIMG.zip!!! I seriously need help please!!

WOW! When you say that this upgrade erases all data, you're not kidding. All of the program i installed from Android Market have been erased!! and now I have to find and install them all again.

This really is very frustrating! Even upgrading a Windows system doesn't do that!!

THese instructions fail to point out that you need to have a micro SD reader, or is that assumed? No one told me that I'd have problems like this when I bought the phone, or that I'd have to go looking for this accessory. This is all more than just "a little inconvenient."

Ok, new problem: Like elo said, I found a mini SD adapter, and deleted the first SAPPIMG.zip from the SD card. I down loaded the second update file, moved the second SAPPIMG.zip (the larger one) to the SD card, and attempted to retry steps 3 to 8. But when I held down power and volume down, the white screen only gave me an option for simlock and fastboot. No installation started automatically.
Then I tried clearing the SD card and starting again from the first SAPPIMG.zip, but to no avail (possibly because it didn't fully reboot after the first half, just the loop?). Still, nothing happens.
Help me!

Thanks for the help. Since I did (several) factory resets, and therefore wiped my phone, will I have to redo the first part?

If you're getting the never-ending boot screen, your phone is -not- bricked. you just haven't finished the second part. you NEED a micro-sd adapter. Turn the phone off (take out the battery), and have a micro-sd card adapter. while the phone is off, take out the sd card and plug it on your comp and delete SAPPIMG.zip from the memory card. Once that's deleted, you need to extract "HTC_Magic_Update_File2.zip" and move "SAPPIMG.zip to the memory card (it's got the same name as the first "SAPPIMG.zip" file, but the second one is supposed to be around 85mb, so don't confuse the two) after that, just repeat steps 3-8 from the first part and that should finish the update on the phone. (this part takes a while, so be patient)

I think I fixed through the random pressing of buttons (at least, it looks like it's supposed to on the Rogers email) but now my phone is stuck in a never-ending reboot loop after installing the first half, much like, I'm assuming, Valsung. I've tried a factory reset (will I therefore have to install the first part again?) but to no avail. Suggestions?

I'm having a bit of difficulty getting this to work on my mac, and I'm not tech-savy by any means, so if anyone could help me by answering these probably very elementary questions, I'd be very grateful.

I downloaded "HTC_Magic_Update_File1.zip" and found the "SAPPIMG.zip" within it. Here's my first question: what does it mean to "extract SAPPIMG.zip to the root of your memory card" and how do I do it? I tried just dragging the little file icon into the phone, then doing the in-and-out-then-reboot thing with the SDcard, according to the handy little illustrations that came in the e-mail from Rogers, but nothing started installing.

Again, any help that anyone can offer to my Cro-Magnon brain would be greatly appreciated.

uhh... this should read...
"The update is available on the Rogers website and requires a pc with WINXP or Vista for successful install. If you are a Windows 7 or Mac user, you're SOL! REGRETABLY Rogers Wireless has also disabled internet access until this update has been installed, making any phone used to retrieve work email completely useless. In addition, the update completely wipes out all existing apps and configuration settings previously installed on the phone, and does not provide instructions for backing this data up... which is difficult to do when internet access has been severed. This process "UNbearable" to say the least."
