Apple Suing the “Great Artists” of HTC

First Nokia and now HTC. Apple is suing the Taiwan based Smart/Super phone maker for infringement of 20 patents. Surprisingly, Apple is not suing over multi-touch, but over patents that stretch from the iPhone’s UI to its hardware. I do not know much about patents, but here you can view Apple’s official complaint http://www.scribd.com/doc/27724245/Apple-HTC-Complaint-U-S-ITC.

At this early stage, it’s almost impossible to see where this might go.  Obviously we’ll be watching this closely as HTC is quite possibly the best at making Android phones what they are.  Check out the quote below from this week that comes from Steve Jobs

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it.”

Now, check out another quote from the same Steve Jobs from back in 1996.  During a PBS documentary called Triumph of the Nerds, he was quoted as saying the following:

“…Picasso had a saying he said good artists copy great artists steal. And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.”

There is no doubt that Google is a big reason Apple has gone after HTC.  In our eyes, this shows us that Apple views Android and the coming wave of smartphones as a threat to their business.  Will there be a counter suit against Apple?  Probably.  HTC has been making smart phones of their and likely has a few patents they could dust off.

Taiwan Slaps Google With $1 Million NT Fine

It would seem that Taiwan, like most Android users, disagrees heavily with Google’s 15-minute app refund policy. In fact, they have deemed it unlawful and have slapped Google with a hefty fine (US$345,500) for not complying with a June 4th request to revise their app sales and service provisions.

Why is it not troubling Motorola, LG or Sony Ericsson?

Because Apple is trying to knock the least known manufacturer off, and if they win, then I am sure they will progress to the bigger players. HTC is huge in cell phones, but Moto, LG, and Sony are huge in just about everything electronic. In other words, the big 3 have better lawyers.

But something tells me that Google won't stand by and let HTC be taken down…

What if Google stops all their services on the iPhone…
They would never do it… but imagine.. For a week… no Google search, gmail, maps on iPhone… Now that would be fun! :-)

I don't think we should worry about HTC or Android… All this will just end up as some bad press for Apple and then nothing (maybe a settlement out-of court, possibly with Google in the middle).

You don't patent ideas, you patent inventions. The two statements aren't mutually exclusive.

I think software shouldn't be patentable but it currently is in the US so companies have to deal with the laws as they exist.

its all apple can do to stop androids success, i dont think they can do anything fast enough to stop android from taking over the iphone. patent wars take years. by then android will be on top.
