Are Google and Verizon Cooking up an iPad Killer?

Of course they are.  That is, they would be if they were smart.  In speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon Wireless chief executive Lowell McAdam indicated the carrier could be working on a tablet computer running Google’s Android platform.

We’re looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience. – Lowell McAdam

We can’t imagine anyone who would be shocked to learn that Verizon would be headed right for AT&T’s jugular with an iPad killer. The market has yet to be dominated by anyone and Google is a big enough brand to come in and shake things up.  Apple will not have the same head start that they enjoyed with the iPhone.

When Verizon and Google announced the Motorola Droid, they were very clear in saying that this was the beginning of a family of products.  As to whether or not that meant a tablet remains to be seen.

Google’s response?  “Android is a free, open source mobile platform. This means that anyone can take the Android platform and add code or download it to create a mobile device without restrictions. The Android smartphone platform was designed from the beginning to scale downward to feature phones and upward to MID and netbook-style devices. We look forward to seeing what contributions are made and how an open platform spurs innovation, but we have nothing to announce at this time.”

iPhone killer, iPad killer… how come we never hear the words "Android killer"? and why do these people/companies believe that the smart money is on spending the next 2 years spending mllions of dollars building something that looks like an iPad.

If they were so smart they would be coming up with the next "big thing" and designing something that Apple would be trying to copy. Now that would be smart!
