Barnes & Noble Update 3G Nook, Release WiFi-Only Version

Barnes & Noble have released a new WiFi-only version of their Android-powered nook eReader at the very enticing price point of $149.99.  Essentially, the only difference between this and the original is the connection.  Speaking of the original, the 3G & WiFi capable model has dropped fifty bucks and now sells at $199.99.  B&N have also rolled out another update to the nook.  This release, version 1.4, has three key components.

  1. Extended AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspot support — FREE and seamless connection to AT&T’s entire nationwide Wi-Fi network including restaurants, hotels and additional locations, and wherever you see an AT&T Wi-Fi sign.
  2. New extra extra large font size
  3. Go-To Page feature allows users to go to a specific page in their eBook

This update is to be done manually through the nook support page as long as you are connected via WiFi.  At some point next week there will be an automatic download made available as well.  If you decide to wait for the auto update, you might need to ‘Check for new B&N content’ under the My Library area.

That seems like a good idea to me, though I really like the benefit of being anywhere in the world and being able to read whatever I and being able to get my rss feeds and simple real time quotes on precious metals at http://www.learcapital.com/mobile

Since this unit has an LCD booster and a processor fast enough for Android, it is conceivable that without these two things, and just the right part drive intact, $100 e-Reader can be done today.
