Beta Test This! RockPlayerBase

For sometime now, Android users have been missing a good video player playing wide range of formats. A new video player named RockPlayerBase has been thrown into the internet for Android users to test. The uploader claims it can play AVI, DivX, MKV and even RMVB on Android 2.1 and above. It can be a reason to rejoice for all those people who wanted to watch their favorite TV Shows or movies on their phone.

This player has been tested by Feelandroid on a Nexus One with different video types and this is what they came up with.

  • MKV
  • H264 High profile, 720 x 304 @ 24fps @ 405Kbps
  • AAC 44.1KHz
  • perfect quality
  • 14 to 20 FPS

TV Shows:

  • AVI
  • DivX 5, 704 × 1.097 @ 384 Kbps @ 24 FPS
  • MP3 @ 128Kbps 48KHz
  • Perfect quality
  • 22-24 FPS

  • MKV
  • H264 High profile, 848 x 480 @ 24fps @ 302Kbps
  • AAC 48KHz
  • Lots of Artifacts
  • No Subs (ASS, Advanced Sub Station)
  • 8 to 15 FPS

  • MP4
  • H264 Baseline profile, 800 × 3.120 @ 448 Kbps @ 30 FPS
  • AAC, 44.1KHz @ 151 Kbps
  • Perfect quality
  • 13 to 16 FPS

720p Artbeats HD Demo:

  • MP4
  • Main profile H.264, 1280 × 720 @ 30 FPS @ 5.994 Kbps
  • AAC @ 66Kbps 44.1KHz
  • Perfect quality
  • 3 to 6 FPS

Artbeats HD 1080p Demo:

  • MP4
  • H264 Main profile, 1920 x 1080 @ 10Mbps @ 30FPS
  • AAC, 44.1KHz @ 192Kbps
  • Perfect quality
  • 1 to 3 FPS

I decided to do some testing of my own to see what I would find.  Using a Motorola Milestone, I got these results.

  • AVI – Very Smooth with a frame rate of 18-24fps.
  • MKV – Lags a lot, Audio track goes out of sync.
  • RMVB – Considerably smooth.
  • MKV files are not smooth at all. It depends on the device also, so try it on a phone with a high-end CPU.

I hope the developers are getting feedback and working on the spots where it could be improved. Apart from a few minor issues, we have a very good video player to look out for!  Get your .apk here. This beta version expires on  July 15th. Try it on your phone and tell us what you think!

Unfortunately it didn't work for me, I was running Avatar and the FPS were about 11-14 and the sound cut out after about 5 seconds. (Droid 2.1)

From what I can see, it's called 'RockPlayer' and not 'RockPlayerBase'…

Very simple to download. Go here:
from your phone's browser and download the file. Make sure you put in the security code and wait the 40 seconds or so for the screen to go to either the "premium download" or "free download." Choose the "free download" and the file will download onto your phone. Click on it when its down downloading and install it on your phone.
