7-Inch GENTOUCH78 Tablet Available at KMART for $150

Kmart just became another place to shop for Android tablets.  Yeah, that Kmart.  They are currently offering a 7-inch tablet from a company called Augen that features some impressive specs.  Dubbed the GENTOUCH78, this unit is said to run Android 2.1 and supposedly promises access to the full Android Market.  Although it’s a WiFi only tablet, I’m finding it awful difficult to not pick one up for that feature alone.  I would be more than content to have one of these around the house until something else from a major player comes along.

Check out the hardware said to be included:

  • 800×480 color TFT touch panel screen
  • CPU: 800 Mhz
  • Ram: DDR2 256mb
  • Internal Memory: 2GB
  • Expansion Slots: SD/MMC card slot up to 16GB
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity with Full Web Browsing Capability
  • Supports Ebook Formats: Text, PDF, E-PUB, HTML
  • Supports Media Formats: MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC
  • Supports most popular E-Book formats
  • Picture Viewer in JPEG, BMP
  • Video Player
  • Rechargeable Lithium Battery
  • Carrying case included
Awesome!  Alright, so here’s what you need to do…

Another Sign that Android is Taking Over the Mobile Universe

We had an interesting press release come across our desks today, concerning the company Pinger and it’s Textfree app for Android. The gist of the press release was how fast it took the number of Android users to gain parity with the number of iOS users using Textfree on Apple devices. So how long do you think it took for the Android app to catch up?

"Supports Media Formats: MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC"
Why do these lists never mention Ogg, despite the fact that Ogg Vorbis (at least) is almost certainly supported? Manufacturers just seem to have a blind spot about this…

This tablet supports FLAC? Why doesn't the stock Android 2.1 or 2.2 build support this? My Nexus One with Froyo build FRF91 has no support for any lossless audio format.

Your faulty claim that K-Mart has this goes beyond belief. Where do you get your information from an elf.
Repost this article with the correct information please.

whatever you can add about the device would be enormously helpful — capacitive or resistive touchscreen? Does yours have a camera, as I've heard rumors that it might? Android Marketplace there? And how is the UI, is it choppy or fairly smooth? thanks.

How’s the battery life? Sounds like a great deal, but if the battery dies after a couple of hours, I would never really use it.

I was highly skeptical with the linksgoing to shoplocal.com and not a real Kmart page. And like others, couldn't it listed on the Kmart site.

But if you go to kmart.com and click on Weekly Ad (upper right corner under the shopping cart) then click on "View Our New Personalized Weekly Ad" then click "Computers & Electronics" on the left.. you'll see the Augen 7" Tablet there. Clicking on it doesn't seem to do anything, but it does have a banner that says "In Stores Only". So you might have to check your local store to see if they're in stock.

At least it seems legit. Definitely going to have to check this out. Maybe see if CM6 runs on it if there are any limitations to the stock OS is too limited.

It also says you are saving $20. I'm assuming the non sale price would then be $170.00

The KMart blog says that they’re having some distribution issues and to ask for a raincheck so that you get the $149.99 price when they do get them in. Engadget has a link to the blog.

Checked the K-Marts in my area(Roseville, CA) today(2010-07-26) and they haven't received them yet. They expect to have them middle of next week but the ARE issuing Rain Checks so you can get them at the sale price when they arrive.

They are little buttons on the back of it. Not the easiest to use but they do the trick

Eastern WA – Kmart didn't have them, nor could they give me a shipping date but did issue a rain check. There is space on the display and shelves for the tablet and the Augen netbook. They had the Augen reader in stock.

Does anyone have one in hand yet? Any chance of pix, video?

So no accelerometer or cam? Even just a cam would have been great for skyping or something. I was really digging this until that.

    • Marcelo L
      July 27, 21:11 Reply

As I understand it, there IS supposed to be an accelerometer on this one, as it should rotate the desktop completely. As for a web cam, I don't have it 100% confirmed, but it may have a USB port, in which case, as with other tablets, it may be possible to utilize a usb web cam. Not a perfect solution, but workable.

Still no sight of it here in Sunny SoFla.

I had the tablet for exactly 6 hours and returned it.
don’t buy it. don’t waste your money..
right of the box was buggy..
    terrible touch screen.
if it had a accelerometer it never worked.
applied the update from their site.
    and bricked it…
    it was done with it…
save the money and let’s wait for something of better quality.
    no wonder Kmart had it…
you get what you paid for.
