Boom! Android Worldwide Growth up 1,309 Percent Year-Over-Year

Today sees yet another report showing Android’s tremendous growth around the world.  Research firm Canalys is reporting that our favorite mobile operating system is up a whopping 1,309 percent year-over-year in the third quarter.  In terms of units moved, this equates to 20 million handsets in 2010 versus 1.4 million last year in the same time frame.  Looking back at this time frame last year, we were still waiting on the arrival of the Droid.  Today, we have phones like the Galaxy S series, EVO 4G, and Droid X flying off shelves.

In the United States, Android accounted for 43.6 percent of the smart phones sold last quarter, beating all other platforms.  Apple came in second at 26.2 percent with RIM following closely at 24.2 percent.  Across the world, however, Android still trails Nokia and the Symbian OS.  Nokia has dipped to 33-percent market share with Android coming up the ladder at roughly 25-percent.
