Yahoo! IM Updated to Include Voice Calls, Still Only Works on Evo and MT4G

The Yahoo! IM app is killer, no doubt. It got an update last month to include video calling, and it’s getting another this month. This update brings voice calls, as well as the ability to use video calling in landscape. Don’t get your hopes up, though. This update doesn’t give you the ability to use the video calling on devices other than the HTC Evo 4G or MyTouch 4G. I hate to nag, but Yahoo needs to change this, as there are several more devices with front-facing cameras out there that need a good video chatting app. Can you say Galaxy Tab or Epic 4G? Even the new Nexus S has a FFC, but it’s not supported. Bummer, huh? Get the updated version by searching for “Yahoo! Messenger” in the Android Market or scan the QR code below. Let us know what you think about the new version. We look forward to reading your comments!

  • Voice call volume is very reduced on HTC Legend. Video calling works also on HTC Legend, but it’s very lagish.

You should consider that they’re working quickly to add functionality and they probably require more information to handle more models of phones.

Consider that Yahoo! haven’t put decent resources toward the version 3.0 beta for Mac. It’s been in beta for 5+ years now, with 2 public builds per year. The iOS version has its own application and a simplified application built into the main, all-encompassing Yahoo! app. The Android app seems to be moving quite well, compared to the early days of the iOS Messenger version.

It worked fine with my Droid 2, via Wifi, when contacting a friend on their computer over the Internet. Much to their surprise! 😉 (Which is one GOOD reason why I do not like Video calling in general!)

Just NOTE: The Video and Audio calling feature is an ADD ON to the main app. It REQUIRES 26MB of space!!!!!!!

Moving the App to SD only brought it down to 19MB on my system!
