Back in November, we heard that game developer PopCap was working on Android versions of several of its most popular games, aiming to release them in “early 2011.” We now have more information:
- Bejeweled 2 will debut this week.
- Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle and Chuzzle are on track to release in the second quarter of 2011.
- They don’t plan to use OpenFeint at this point, but they are “more likely” to use Facebook Connect.
I’m not sure if Q2 counts as “early,” but it will still be in the first half of the year, so I guess we can say they’re generally on target–and it sounds like they will be worth the wait. In an interview with German site androidnews, Cathy Orr of PopCap noted that “we at PopCap tend not to directly ‘port’ our games to new devices. Instead, we adapt them to each appropriate new device or platform, customizing the controls, graphics and other elements as much as possible to optimize the experience.”
Ms. Orr also downplayed the “fragmentation” issue, saying they “haven’t been experiencing problems per se. … We’re familiar with the work required to support a lot of different devices with a lot of different requirements. We are finding that there’s a range of performance for Android devices and we will pick a reference device for a great user experience.”
