App Review: Automated Away Text

I’ll be honest here, I don’t get a bunch of phone calls. I’m a teenager. We text more than anything. But that didn’t stop me from loving this app. The app is called Automated Away Text, and it does pretty much what the title suggests: if you miss a call or receive a message, but can’t reply at the moment, it sends an automated text message to that person, letting them know that you can’t make it to the phone.

You can preset up to 5 messages, and even chose when to send it. For example, if I only wanted the app to send a message when I miss a call, there’s an option for that. When you go into the settings, you’re given 3 different options to change: the Send If option mentioned above, Send To, which asks if you only want to send to people in your contacts or specific contacts, and the last choice is simply for repetition purposes.

I have to admit, the UI is very nice. The soft blues and silvers make this app worth looking at. It’s a pretty simple app, but that’s all it needs to be.

Like I said, this isn’t a very useful app for someone like me, but I can definitely see the appeal for a business user that receives a large number of calls. I can imagine someone being in a meeting and not being able to answer a call. Instead of texting under the table like a high-schooler (guilty as charged), this app sends that message for them, letting the caller know that their call will be returned shortly. Or maybe you’re at work with a customer, and you don’t want to be rude by answering your phone in the middle of a conversation. This app is for you.

So what are you waiting for? Give Automated Away Text a try. You can download it from the Android Market or AppBrain below. It’s only $0.99, which really isn’t that much when you consider that it’s going to fund a great developer. You can look at a few screenshots below.

I’m a grown damn man, and I text as little as I can get away with. Not that I can’t or don’t see a use for it, but I don’t carry on conversations via text, if you want to send me a quick message, go for it. But if you want to do more than one or two quick back-and-forths, you’d better call me.

My phone is also both for business and pleasure, and most of my contacts are calling on landlines, so the option to send a text is utterly useless for me. What it SHOULD do, is give me the option to send an email if the call came from a non-mobile number. Then I might find a use for it.

Nice app. Comes in really handy, especially at the club when I never hear/feel my phone

Isn’t it obvious that if someone doesn’t answer the phone, they aren’t available to talk? You leave a message and wait for a call back. I just don’t see the point of this.

Many people now expect that when they place a call to another’s cell or mobile phone, that person will answer, regardless of whether they are home, at work, or even in transit in a car or train. When the recipient does not answer immediately, the caller may be surprised or put off by the lack of response. Thus, rather than leaving a message and waiting for a return call, the caller is likely to try calling the intended recipient again in a short period of time.

The constant ringing of a cell phone is some situations is unwanted. In fact, at times, the recipient may be forced to answer the phone, simply to say that they are unavailable to talk at the present time.

I also find that in a lot of situations there is peace of mind in knowing that others know where you are if there were to try to contact you.

Considering there is a : NO TEXTING AND DRIVING ” law.. ( Massachusetts) this app is a must!!!!!! It could even save lives!!!!!!!!!!

What if I put this on my phone, and the other person does it as well (For text only, I have voicemail for calls, would just like to tell people i am tied up and cant text back). Will the two phones continually keep sending each other away texts if they are both enabled?
