Beta Test This: Feedly for Android

Feedly, a great Chrome and Firefox extension that turns your Google Reader subscriptions into a slick, personalized magazine, has opened up a public beta of their new Android app.

Feedly will compete with the likes of Pulse and FeedSquares for the title of best looking Android feedreader, and I imagine it looks especially great on a big tablet screen. In addition to pulling content from Google Reader, the app also sends information back to Reader, marking items as read and starring items in Reader that you like in Feedly. And, it integrates with your bit.ly, Instapaper and Read it later accounts.

Though just hitting beta, the app is pretty stable, but the Feedly team is still polishing off rough edges and adding functionality. For now, the biggest issue is that it asks for your Gmail address and Google password to connect with Reader, rather than offering a more secure form of authorization. Addressing this is a high priority on Feedly’s roadmap, but for now, if you’re paranoid like me, you can use Google’s two-step authentication to generate an application-specific password for Feedly.

Tips on using the app, as well as information on what’s on the roadmap to complete before official release, are available on Feedly’s blog. It’s also a good place to provide feedback on any issues you run into with the beta.

The app itself is available in the Android Market for devices running 2.2+.
