AT&T Set to Buy Out T-Mobile

Though not strictly Android-related, AT&T’s announcement that it will buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion is news that will have a huge impact on many of our readers.

Combining the two carriers’ infrastructure should mean a more solid network for customers, and it also means that T-Mobile’s customers can be more optimistic about seeing LTE phones in their future. On the other hand, they may rightfully worry about the possibility of dealing with AT&T’s restrictive policies, such as not allowing installation non-Market apps and their recently announced crackdown on tethering.

Of the deal, AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said:

“This transaction represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand critical infrastructure for our nation’s future. It will improve network quality, and it will bring advanced LTE capabilities to more than 294 million people. Mobile broadband networks drive economic opportunity everywhere, and they enable the expanding high-tech ecosystem that includes device makers, cloud and content providers, app developers, customers, and more. During the past few years, America’s high-tech industry has delivered innovation at unprecedented speed, and this combination will accelerate its continued growth.”

It’s worth noting that the deal will have to be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. That means that it will likely be some time before customers see any change.

Not happy at all I have been with TMOBILE since I can remember I don’t lime at&t at all if I wanted them then I would of went with them. I hope this does not happen I will close my 3 account first before I go to those guys!!!! Please don’t let this happen

  • Tigego1

Yes I love my T-mobile customer service also. And I hear from everyone on AT&T how crappy theirs is. I love my U-verse, but I did not want AT&T cell service. Ugh!!!

Thankfully I was within the Tmobile ‘Buyer’s Remorse’ grace period. Today I shipped back my Samsung Galaxy 4g and shopped new phones with Verizon (porting my # as soon as Tmob credits my return). I made a vow years ago that I would never, ever be an AT&T customer again. RIP Tmobile, its been real.

I hate ATT. They are greedy w/ bad customer service. I have been happy w/ Tmobile all these years, and ATT my husband had, and it was AWFUL!! This is our government folks. We pay the FCC to keep their jobs to regulate this stuff w/ our tax dollars. But when you go to their site it is very confusing as to how to give them your 2 cents worth opinion! I am so mad about the rip off of this scam. America needs to wake up and take our country back from these controlling corporations. Did anyone find a petition or who to contact with any power?

Sabrinak, type in how to file a complaint with FCC it will take you to the site you need. Write often- get everyone you know to write also. thks

Your comments are all pathetic, you hear one bad experience with atnt and assume they are not customer oriented, its a proven fact they have the fastest mobile networks….they have the largest variety of phones ranging from basic to smart phones..and great customer service. Your pussy gets all bent and sandy over what you hear but you have no personal experience. T-mobile is garbage and they are lucky to get the offer they did.

    • Anonymous

You are so wrong—ATT does not have the fastest mobile networks—-I have worked for them in the past–wouldn’t ever again–they are HORRIBLE and customer service is WORSE!!! Thank God we have about a year before this could pass—hopefully we can stop it in time. Your language is appalling–small minds/nasty words.

  • Jalyson76

I’ve had at&t service and switched to T-Mobile for a reason. At&t has horrible. Customer service and no good plans or coverage. They drop calls and half the time ur service doesn’t work and of course they always have an excuse so they are not to BLAME!!! I wish T-Mobile would reconsider. I’ve always had great customer service from them and enjoy doing business with them. If at&t takes over I will switch. I’d rather b cell phoneless than to use at&t as my carrier!!!! Somebody stop this!!!!

    • Telcobilly

Been with Tmo since ’05 and am very unhappy about the prospect of an att takeover. I WONT stay, might have to go to Verizon..

  • Pedro77593

Calm down people. All this means is that (hopefully) At&t coverage will be 2x stronger, therefore no more dropped calls and we shall be seeing 4G LTE alot sooner. Yes at&t does control alot of the features but finally there will be a reliable 4G network with excellent coverage.

NONONO!!! TM has 4g phones now, my son has one. We have 10 phones between two houses and have NEVER had a dropped call in 5 years we have been with TM. Want everyone to write or visit FCC site and complain about this idiotic buy out and it can be stopped if we work at it. Lots of communication to them will stop it!!!!

This sucks if I wanted at&tackie I would of went with them even when they had the iphone I still fidnt get it now they dont even have that this is wackkk!!!

  • Lillybizmail

Bummed! I have been a loyal T Mobile user for many years for what everyone has also said…the best customer service. I hate AT&T, doing ANYTHING with them is a nightmare and I too will take my money else where for cell phone service. AT&T can spin this anyway they want, it doesn’t change what we know to be true, and although us saying we won’t buy from them any longer won’t change this merger, I hope at least, AT&T will BE WISE and try to adopt T Mobiles customer service that millions of users ENJOY paying for. If they fail to improve, alot of former T Mobile customers will not continue to stay with them. But I’m sure their banking on
lazy Americans to put up and shut up,so they might continue doing business as they wish. Consumers can still have an effect!

  • Mario G_reyes

wow… the whole reason i left my previous carrier was because of t-mobiles Great Customer Service. I dont know about this Radical change!!! a Very unhappy customer if this pulls through.

PLEASE DON”T JUST SIT HERE AND COMPLAIN———GET BUSY AND CONTACT FCC AND JUSTICE DEPT WITH YOUR GRIPES THE MORE THAT DO THE BETTER CHANCE THEY WILL NOT OKAY THE BUYOUT. MY WHOLE FAMILY(28 ADULTS) HAVE ALREADY SENT OUT LETTERS TO FCC AND THE JUSTICE DEPT TELLING THEM HOW DISGRUNTLED WE ARE WITH THE PROSPECT OF ATT TAKING OVER TMOBILE. WE LAID IT ON THE LINE ABOUT HOW MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE IT WILL BE AND HOW HORRIBLE THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS. GET BUSY FOLKS–WE ONLY HAVE A YEAR TO GET THIS STOPPED!!!

  • Maureenb2009

What does this mean for tmobile customers. I personally hate AT&T I would not want to be their customer again.

  • Thedoobers

I don’t want to be an AT&T customer. I have never been more satisfied with any company regarding quality of customer service. If that goes away…. So will I.

  • Hood_lilbean

T-mobile may have great customer service yeah but let’s face it there network is terrible, t mobile is by far one of thee slowest and unreliable phone companies. I’m excited for the change and it won’t cost any extra to sign with att since I’m already a part of t mobile. And also android will not go away even though the I phone will be offered to more people because there are to many people that for some odd reason don’t like apple products even tho they are more efficient and apple planned on expanding to all the other phone companies with on 5 years anyways. If you want cheap rates just switch to cricket cause there just as fast as t mobile. Att is definitely a better network to be apart of.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dmoremoney210 Darrell Evans

i have both and i would like to see how it rides out as one

  • JXL6654

I HATE HATE HATE HATE ATT THEY SUCK!!! FOR ONCE I WOULD LIKE THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN!!!

  • Jennifer_farris

I am thankful that at&t is buying t-mobile. I was once an at&t customer, and had great service. Since I have switched to t-mobile my service has gone down the tubes. At&t has great customer service.

  • Its_boo1974

AT&T can kiss my butt! TMo does have some good phones and way better service and customer service than AT&T! I’m loving my MyTouch 4G and trust me, it’s way faster than the Iphone 4, got a few friends at work that try to pull something up on their Iphone 4’s and when I do it on the MyTouch 4G it’s up, while theirs are still trying to load! LoL …point proven (good device, and better service). Also the plans on TMo are better priced than AT&T’s plans, Quite a few people can agree with me there. I am really going to hate it if the merge takes place, cuz AT&T can kiss my a$$!

  • Rabidrabbit85

Wow the worst rated carrier buying out the best 4G carrier on the market. WTF is up with that? Let me mention that AT&T supposedly improved their networks last year buy investing millions into it but nothing ever changed and they have been rated the worst carrier for the past few years I might add. I see this as a bad bid for people with T-Mobile now as AT&T will ruin their worlds too. Yeah you can forget about great service and great plans because AT&T does have very strict policies such as going over your bandwidth limit on an unlimited data plan…yes it is possible at AT&T I know several people that had this problem because its not something they mention to you when you sign those lovely contracts but next thing you know you owe them 400.00 bucks for one month. If you want to be safe go with Sprint or Verizon. Way better service and great phones all around.

  • Staceyned

really sucks that att is buying out tmobile, tmobile is a great service. I have been with them for 3 years and have never had a problem.

  • Spendiwendi1

This really is an awful thing. My mom has AT&T and has the worse service ever. Dropped calls always, etc. We will definately be changing carriers if this is the case, AT&T is way too expensive!!!!

  • Fademarely

this right here is some bull shit

  • anonymus

Last Fri. 3/25/11 I just happened to catch a local news (Channel 13-Houston, TX) piece on AT&Ts buy out of T Mobile. They were asking ‘random’ citizens on the street how they felt about it, and amazingly not one of them showed any disagreement w/ the move. Umm… strange. I am not in favor of this move at all…but of course I’m one of the millions of ppl who is a happy T Mobile customer, former unhappy AT&T user. Let’s all pray the FTC won’t approve it!!

  • http://profiles.google.com/buttapink26 tyesha griffin

i dont like this at all i loved t-mobile the way the are not with no at&t ugh i hate this

  • Lindsaycastillo

This sucks just to show that at&t they can t do 4g.Sucks y because i like t mobile better 4g…

  • Alyssa

AT&T has the worse customer service out of any phone company we have EVER used. When my husband first got relocated because of the marine corps our new duty station didn’t offer Tmobile so we went to AT&T for a year and it was AWFUL! As soon as Tmobile came to the area we switched back and have been with them for roughly 10 years. If AT&T does buy out tmobile I will definately be switching carriers & taking my 5lines with me! AT&T’s prices are ridiculous too!

  • Snban4

I had AT&T as a land line company, they were billing me for calls we did not make. It took over two years to get them off the bill. I like T- Mobile because they allowed me to swith from Blue Wireless without the need to check my credit. I was able to get two phones free with a two year contract. AT&T is more expensive and the service is not as good. They need to ask customers first if they want this to happen. I don’t know if I want to have AT&T as my wireless carrier.

  • Zox_wolf

ATnT till the end dudettes. ATnT rocks all other services. Thank goodness Tmobile is getting bought out. They suck. I had them my last 2 years and it was horrible. They dont have any good phones, the service is unreliable. I now own ATnT and its amazing. Iphone creams all of phones and the service is outstanding. Good stuff ATnT. Way to take control. Kudos

  • :/

Sucks I have been with t-mobile for about 6 years now and its very upsetting that at&t is buying them out well time to switch to verizon………..

  • Terra

Seriously, screw ATT, I had cingular and when ATT bought them they screwed me over. I switched from ATT to go to Tmobile and the whole time I was setting up my t mobile account I was talking hella shit about ATT. ATT is over priced and scams their customers. I have them for phone and internet and every month I have to call them because THEY are “making mistakes” on my bill, whatever I know their game they’re trying to scam us to get more money. It’s so ironic how I left ATT to go to tmobile. Well thank God my contract is up soon, now I’m leaving t mobile! SCREW THIS!!!!!!!!

  • Alan danner

This is bullshit I just get out of a contract with AT&T and go back to tmobile now I’m going to end up with AT&T any way screw this going to switch to metro pcs

  • Alan danner

  • kisha

the day the deal is final will be the day i leave. I choose the carrier i want and it wont be AT&T. I will defintely miss the excellent customer service that tmobile has given me the last 7 years.

  • Ev Batey

ATT to consume T-Mobile: Over 50 years in radio telephony, I have been abused by and learned to HATE AT&T and their attitude toward customers. So in 12 months its Verizon or leave the country. Thugs.

  • jimmAy

I think it’s a smart move to AT&T; if you can’t out perform your competition, buy them. Although it will be painful for T-Mobile customers, it will be more painful for a fat company to watch as 90% of their new client pool go with their competition, again. In the end, they will be hurt more by it than a few million unsatisfied customers, especially after shelling out 39B.

  • Cadyshabaneh

I have avoided AT&T all these years. REFUSED to convert due to their severe lack of coverage, and outlandish prices for not only phones but poor service as well. I have been with T-mobile for YEARS, and am so incredibly disappointed, and feel betrayed for this situation. AT&T is not superior in any way, they simply are moving in for a monopoly.

  • http://www.cotdazr.org/ Everett Batey CCHAITILA

Any one got a list of the other pros and cons from leaving the last GSM (international standard) Tether friendly carrier and moving to the non-International CDMA land, but still getting reasonable tethering? Guess this will be g-bye GSM Droid, no unlock for non-US use..

And, the probable cost of 3 web / email smartfone handsets with 2000 minutes, unlimited text, tethering.

sux now the monthly bill gona go up hate att……

  • Melly1881

I will not go with at&t!!! I will switch to Verison! I have always loved Tmobile for their customer service and their plans. I am so mad!!!!!

  • Missgolightly4

I left AT&T just last. Not because they were over priced, or the service was poor (both which were true at the time) but because their CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE! God I hope they keep some of the T-mobiles customer service skills.

i agree this is upsetting ,i do not want a different phone or phone plan, i do not want to have to pay more to talk to ppl that do not have att. with t- moblie i have unlimited long and local doesnt matter what service they have. true att has been on bottom of list from what i have read.i had att untill 2005 when i got my first cell phone with t-mobile . i called the companys they told me no phone plans will change nor will anyone from t-mobile have to get different phone , i wonder how true to their word that is

  • Angelarocks72

I get to worry my plan might change. I dont want to change my plan. Oh and my account is close to being due for an upgrade. Now I need to figure out if I should upgrade or wait. This is going to piss me off severely if my plan changes. All I keep thinking is it will change and my bill will get higher.
