Review: PowerSkin Cases

Last week, we talked about the release of the PowerSkin Cases, which are cases that include a backup battery, designed specifically for various Android phones.  I had the opportunity to get my hands on one of these cases for the HTC Glacier/MyTouch 4G, and decided to do a few tests to see how it stacked up.

Personally, I feel that I am a heavy user with my phone.  On an average day, I will run Wi-Fi for a few hours, constantly updating Facebook and Twitter, Googling random things, and having the phone sit in my pocket for up to an hour with the notification light blinking until I can get to it.  On average, my battery will go from 100% to about 75% in a few hours.  (The Glacier has awesome battery life for me, but my phone is rooted, which helps.)  To see how well the case works, I opted to not charge my phone during the day, and see how much more life I got out of it by using the case.

I found that the case added just under 4 hours to my battery, which was a definite plus for me.  The case is essentially a back-up battery, which uses its power to charge the phone (or to keep it charged).  Once the case battery has died, then the phone runs on its internal battery.

As I said, I got about four hours extra on this case, which was awesome.  The case itself is the smooth silicone, so it was a great protector, and looks good too. However, nothing is perfect, and because it is an additional battery, it doubles the thickness of the phone.  What I love about the HTC Glacier is that it is a thin and sleek phone, and although the case gives me four additional hours without needing to charge, it seemed bulky in my pocket.  Not a deal-breaker for me, but before picking up one of these, bear in mind that it does make the phone twice the size while its in the case.

The PowerSkin cases are available for many Android phones.  Head on over to their site today and place your order!

Hmmm this looks interesting. I almost placed my order just now but then I got to thinking won’t that little nubby thing on the side that covers the inside cable make the phone awkward to hold? So I have to ask from a design point……… Does the cable cover on the side feel “too much in the way”?….. I’m sure it’s probably not as bad as trying to hold the phone when the charge cable is plugged in but would like some feedback on if you can give some…. Thanks.

If you’re right-handed, you won’t notice the difference. If you’re left-handed, it will be like trying to text with the cable plugged in. with that being said, if you are right-handed and have out plugged in, it is somewhat cumbersome.

I am right handed but I generally hold the phone in my left hand and do my typing with my right hand. Still thinking about get this thing but still unsure.

I find that the cable cover is very unobtrusive as I tend to find my little finger resting on it comfortably. It also serves as a subconscious reference for up and down as I reach for it in my pocket. Love the extra battery life (I use mine on the HTC Sensation 4G which tends to be a battery hog).

Also… and sorry for double posting….. powerskin is offering a 15.00 discount if you use this code “CHARGEON” during your amazon checkout and with free shipping you can get this for $44.99 …. I don’t think that’s too bad at all for a device that can add life to your phone…….. I still want to know if the cable cover on the side feels too cumbersome before I buy this.

I don’t know why they did not use the dock connector on the side of the Mytouch 4G for these cases. It can charge from the contacts on the side of the phone, no need for the cable to plug into the micro usb port and create the lump on the side.

I’ve had mine now for over a month, and it’s the best thing I’ve seen since peanut butter and jelly!  I consider myself a frequent user on my phone, either talking, texting, or on the web.  I can charge it overnight, and go for a full day, without ever worrying about it going dead.  It’s well, worth it – and yes it does make it a little bulkier than without it, the trade off of the added battery is much more valuable.  It makes it a lot better having a smartphone now, not having to charge it every couple of hours.

Will the next version have the features of the iphone powerskin?  Option to turn back up battery on/off, no bump on the side, and sync capability.  These are good features I’d love to see in the next version.

Mine lasted about four months, and then quit. It got harder and harder to charge the battery, until it wouldn’t take a charge at all. Still under warranty, so I’ll try to get a new one.
