Verizon Set to Offer Tiered Data on July 7
Verizon is ready to add their name to the growing list of carriers offering tiered data plans come next month. According to information passed to Droid-Life, Verizon will be offering up a trio of options to customers in 2GB, 5GB, and 10GB plans. The rates will be slightly higher than what AT&T charges their customers and will not hinge upon whether you have a 3G or 4G handset.
Should you want to tether your data connection, be prepared to cough up an additional $20 per month. But, in the spirit of being nice, Verizon will give you 2GB of additional data to share across multiple devices. So instead of $30 for 2GB, you’d pay $50 for 4GB. Here’s a quick breakdown.
Expected Verizon data tiers:
- 2GB – $30/month
- 5GB – $50/month
- 10GB – $80/month
Expected Verizon data tiers (with tethering):
- 4GB – $50/month
- 7GB – $70/month
- 12GB – $100/month
Running over your allotted data and you’ll be paying $10 per 1GB. Tablets are expected to change to $30 for 2GB of data as opposed to today’s $20 for 1GB.
Before you grab pitchforks and head for Verizon’s headquarters, evaluate how much data you’re truly using. Maybe things aren’t quite as bad as they sound. One other thing to keep in mind is that this will not affect anyone under a current contract. While it’s not quite clear how upgrades will be handled, Droid-Life has heard whispers that customers will be able to keep their grandfathered rate plans, even with new phones after July 7th. Either way, we’ll find out in the next couple of weeks.
