Epson Moverio: World's first wearable Android display

epson_moverio_feature5

Epson America today announced that they are now shipping the world’s first Android-based see-through wearable display.  Available immediately through Epson’s retail site, the $699.99 glasses essentially act as an 80-inch perceived display that projects onto the real-world.  Features include Wi-Fi connectivity, about 6 hours of battery life, microSDHC card slot, and 1GB internal storage.

The Android tie-in here is that the track-pad controller is powered by your favorite mobile platform.  Using this controller, one can watch movies from YouTube, Vimeo, play games, browse the web, and more, all in a private manner.  It’s possible to even down and interact with applications and games strictly within the Moverio environment. Did we mention support for side-by-side 3D technonology?

Features of Epson Moverio:

  • Enhanced Mobility: Rechargeable battery offers nearly six hours of battery life
  • Removable Memory: Built-in card slot supports up to 32GB microSDHC card
  • Download and Go: Transfer content, games and apps to the included 4GB microSDHC card or internal 1GB of user storage on the controller
  • Adobe® Flash® 11 Support: Stream videos from popular television websites featuring Flash 11 content and content rich Flash-enabled websites
  • Big Sound: Dolby® Mobile surround sound delivered to personal earphones or Moverio’s detachable earphones (included in-box)
  • Innovative Navigation: Touch-enabled track pad and navigational buttons enable easy interaction of content
  • Immersive 3D: Enjoy side-by-side 3D content like never before

Of course all this potential means nothing unless there is content to support the platform.  As such, Epson is providing Android developers with tools to help create applications to take advantage of the technology.  Developers are encouraged to check out the company’s SDK, submit ideas, and even come to AnDevCon in May where Epson plans to demonstrate the Moverio.   As it stands today, Epson encourages downloading and using apps from the Amazon Appstore and provides a few steps to install and play games.

I got three stars on that level, how about you?
