ABI Research: Samsung, Apple rake in 90 percent of smartphone profits

abi_research_feature

Samsung and Apple are responsible for 90 percent of smartphone profits, according to new findings out of ABI Research.  Collectively capturing more than half (55 percent) of the market, the two companies seem to be running away with our smartphone monies.  Whereas Apple is still the leader in profitability, Samsung now leads all with 43 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter.

The third quarter will be very interesting to watch unfold as Samsung’s Galaxy S III hits the market a few months ahead of Apple’s next iPhone.  Will Samsung be able to deter consumers from adopting iOS with a unified brand and singular form factor?  Will people coming out of contract with older iPhones wait for the next model?  What happens when players like Huawei and ZTE start to flex their muscles outside of China and Europe?
