EDIT: It turns out that Verizon customer service was misinformed, and the bootloaders will NOT be unlocked via an OTA (or any other) update. The OTA update mentioned is for the GSM Radio on the device. The bootloader is to remain locked, and the developer version will continue to be the only unlocking option. via droid-life

Yes, you did just read that correctly! After all that stress, and the tweets blaming Samsung, Samsung came out with a developer edition of the Galaxy S III for Verizon Wireless customers wanting that unlocked bootloader. Now, Verizon is saying that the GSIII’s bootloader will be unlocked in an OTA update. I feel really bad for anyone who already purchased that developer edition with that hefty price tag!

Friday, a customer received an email from Verizon Wireless Support:

My name is Levar and thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless about the boot loader for the Galaxy S3. I know this may be frustrating but there will be a solution soon coming. Samsung will be releasing a software update to unlock your device. Right now, we do not have a date for the release but it shall be soon.

Verizon Wireless appreciates you as a customer and your patience in this matter.
