CyanogenMod 10.1 RC3 now available

galaxy-s2-android-4-1-jelly-king-cyanogenmod-10

The CM team has released their latest release candidate for CyanogenMod 10.1, RC3. According to their post on Google+, the RC3 release is a “small, incrimental change” from RC2, with bug squashes to launcher icon issues, camcorder preview bugs, disappearing widgets, and a slew of translation updates for languages.

The RC3 download is currently available for almost 40 devices, so be sure to hit up get.cm to see if it’s available for yours, and let us know what you think in the comments.

I am disappointed with CM. They seem to be lagging behind some of the other custom ROMs available. Years ago I started with CM on my Moto Droid in 2009, but when I saw what some other mods offered, I never looked back. They are also very rigid and closed-minded about improvements. It is unfortunate because they have considerable influence in the community, or at least they did at one time. I hope they will catch up because their mod is available on so many different phones, but they just perpetuate the mediocrity.

I just flashed CM 10.1 R3 on my Nexus 4. What don’t you like about it? I am kinda new to flashing ROMS. Is there a better ROM you would recommend for my Nexus 4?

I can’t speak for the Nexus 4 as I run a Galaxy Nexus, its predecessor, but I find that ROMs based on AOKP are condiserably more robust, feature-filled, and more-frequently updated than CM and other AOSP-based ROMs. Your opinion may vary once you see the differences. I suggest you look at the Nexus 4-specific forums on RootzWiki or xda-developers. Most of the custom ROMs for your phone will be found there.

Are you aware that, just as many roms are based on aokp, aokp is based on cm? The cm team spends a good deal of their time getting AOSP and cm features to run on new hardware. They do most of the hardware debugging as well. When team unicorn hours to work on aokp they have the advantage of being able to use all of that hardware code that comes out of team douche and team hacksung. It’s already done so they can concentrate on all those new cutting edge features you like so much.

Here’s the other fun fact you may not know. If you check the code review on those better roms you’ll find some of the names from the cm team.

The fact is that without cm the android community would be a whole lot worse off. Take it or leave it but don’t get down on the guys who are making the whole thing work. They do this for free after all.

CM is fine if your favorite flavor is vanilla.
