Samsung Galaxy Gear announced for September 25

Samsung on Wednesday finally wedged itself smack-dab in the middle of the wearable technology space with the introduction of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Set to arrive as soon as September 25, the wrist gadget sports a a 1.63-inch 320×320-pixel super AMOLED screen, a 1.9-megapixel camera, an 800MHz processor and 512MB RAM.

It’s not about hardware details, mind you, as the device is more about experience and extending technology to new places. Some of the standout functions of the Galaxy Gear include notifications of incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and alerts. Thanks to Nuance’s voice and language capabilities, the watch can also conduct hands-free calls, draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms, and check the weather.

Wrapped in one of six different color options (Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green), the Galaxy Gear will feature optimization for 70 apps on day one, including Pinterest, Pocket, Evernote, and Runkeeper.

The GALAXY Gear also serves as a wristwatch and includes several face options that create the opportunity for users to personalize their watch face. It will come preloaded with 10 different clock options and more choices will be downloadable via Samsung Apps.

Reportedly, the Galaxy Gear will retail for $299 when it arrives in US stores in October with the Galaxy Note 3.
