Google Voice moves one step closer to Hangouts integration

Call it a sign of things to come or simply another back-end move for Hangouts, but Google Voice users have a new option today. Log into the Google Voice website and you’ll find that you can now make calls via Hangouts without messing around with a Google+ account. As Alex Wiesen (Google) tells us, this is ideal for those Voice users who are on a laptop or computer and don’t have their smartphone nearby.

To make things easier, we’ve just added Hangouts as an option when making calls from the web. It works even if you aren’t using Hangouts in Gmail, and doesn’t require a Google+ account. Try it the next time you place a call from the Google Voice website — I think it’s a much easier way to keep in touch with people.

Personally, I would rather see Google open up the APIs again and let other apps play nicely with GV. On the other hand, I’d love to see full Hangouts integration so I can send and receive MMS, set better app defaults, and work with better Android Wear and other smartwatches.
