Canalys: Xiaomi overtakes Samsung in Chinese market share

Xiaomi overtakes Samsung with 14% market share of smart phones

Based on data recently released by Canalys, Xiaomi has overtaken mighty Samsung for market share in China for smart phone sales in Q2 of 2014. Xiaomi sold roughly 15 million units, up from 4.4 million units over the same span from last year. Growing an astronomical 240 percent, they have overtaken Samsung as the top seller of smart phones in China in the time frame.

While most people here in the United States have never heard of Xiaomi, the Chinese have become very familiar with the handset maker due to their low cost of devices as well as offering a customized version of Android, called MIUI, which allows its customers to offer feedback online.

For $299 USD, you can buy the Xioami Mi 3, which has similar specs to many high end phones sold in the United States. The M3 comes in a magnesium alloy metal frame with a full 1080p display at 8.1mm thin and comes in a wide array of colors.

Just last month, Xiaomi also released the Mi4 which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, Adreno 330, 3 GB of RAM, 16/64 GB of storage, and a full 1080P HD display similar to other flagships like the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5. The Mi4 has a price tag of $399.99 USD and is expected to ship this month. It’s pretty obvious why they have taken the majority share, high end hardware and software at half the price of Apple and Samsung products equals more customers.

Xiaomi is limited to a few markets outside of China, and is potentially looking to expand into other countries like India and Brazil, but unfortunately is not looking to expand into the United States. Globally, Samsung and Apple still dominate the smart phone market, but the little guys like Xiaomi and OnePlus One might force the Goliath of the smartphone industry to rethink their strategy.
