Enjoy word games and crossword puzzles? Check out Word Fever at the Google Play Store (app review)

I’m not a huge gamer these days, but I still do enjoy games from time to time and word games are particularly fun for me. Words with Friends has been an app I have on every smartphone for I can play it at my leisure while also playing crossword puzzles in the newspaper once a week. Endless runners, connecting dots, and tower defense apps are not the genre of games I look to for fun even though I know they are massively popular. Word games are just more up my alley these days and my most recent favorite is Word Fever from Second Gear Games.

Setup and Usage

Just like with all other applications, all you have to do is head on over to the Google Play Store, click download and it will install on your device. Word Fever is 100% free to install and play.

I really appreciate free apps that don’t bombard you with advertisements – they’re not only annoying when you accidentally click on them, but they also make the game much less fun and ruin the overall look. Word Fever does not have any ads and is supported through in-app purchases.

Description from Google Play:

Word Fever is part crossword, part word search game. Use the clues to figure out what the hidden words are. The answers can be about nature, food, science, sports, vacation, geography and many other categories.

It starts very easy but gets challenging quickly. Find the twisted words and slide your finger over the letters – as easy as that! If you like to play brain teasers, charades, text twist, quiz and word puzzles, this one is for you.

Features:
• Hundreds of puzzles for almost endless fun.
• Easy controls: tap or slide to make words.
• Play in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Russian.

In a way the game is like a crossword puzzle as it offers you hints, and then it is also like Boggle where you connect letters that are touching to make the words. It’s not just a “how fast can you connect the letters” type of game, but it is also a game that makes you think a little more critically since it behaves like a crossword puzzle with hints or clues. Each word starts out with a letter that is highlighted in green, and then you make the word that makes sense by clicking or dragging onto the adjacent letters from the starting point.

It’s simple in nature but gets complicated pretty quickly. If you’re the type who doesn’t like to sit and try to figure out the answers on your own, you can buy hints with the in-app purchases. Prices start at 99 cents for 10 hints, and go up to $19.99 for 220 hints.

I definitely am not a fan of in-app purchases, and prefer to stare at the puzzles until I figure them out. It’s a little more gratifying for me that way and is a great time killer if I need a break.

Summary

Game apps are definitely a rarity when it comes to adding something new to my device. But Word Fever is a new staple that will provide hours of entertainment while challenging my brain beyond just connecting as many words as I can in a limited amount of time. It’s definitely one of the most fun brain teasers I have played in a long time.
