Are you as excited as we are about Google’s new Pixel smartphones? The reaction is mixed with some fans miffed at the high price of the newest Google devices, with others who simply can’t wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest.
We're giving stuff away to help celebrate our tenth anniversary. Are you in?
If you don’t want to drop $650 on the Pixel but want the new look of the new round icons, new search bar and wallpapers we’ve got you covered. One of our favorite features of Android is the ability to change the look of your smartphone to look just about any way you want. I’ve been using the latest smartphones from Samsung and LG, and quite frankly I think their launchers are about as ugly as it gets.
If you don’t know what a launcher is, you can read all about it here. Stock launchers from Samsung, LG, HTC and Motorola do not allow for third party icon packs, so make sure you install a compatible launcher first. If you want to install the round Pixel icon pack, you will need to download a launcher like Nova or Action Launcher 3 to customize your look.
Once you’ve installed your launcher, all you need to do is to purchase the Pixel Icon Pack from Ciao Studio at the Google Play Store. It does cost $0.99 so be ready to bust out your wallet.
• Android 7.1 Nougat icons
• Turn any icon in Android 7.1 Nougat style
• Supported by most Launchers
• Frequently updates with new icons
• Dynamic calendar icon according to the day of the month.
Pixel Icon Pack officially supports the following launchers: Apex, Nova, Aviate, ADW, Action, Smart, Next, GO, Holo. However it can be used in many more launchers that support icon packs but aren’t specified within the application itself and in CyanogenMod Theme Engine.
Click “Apply Theme” and it will tell you to activate the icon pack in your launcher. Once active, all of your icons will change to the new Pixel Round theme.
Official Pixel Wallpapers
After you’ve installed the Pixel Icon Pack, you can then use one of the six included official Pixel Wallpapers from within the icon app. Or you can download all of the official wallpapers by joining this shared Google Photos Album.
Custom Search Bar
Last but not least, you will want the new Pixel Google Search Bar. It does away with the ugly white search bar and replaces it with a small “G” logo at the top left of the display.
Go to the Google Play Store and download the Custom Search Bar Widget. The app itself is free, but if you want the new search bar you will need to spend $0.99 on the Pro Version in-app purchase.
Go into the settings of the app and activate the new search bar. You will probably want to change the default search engine back to Google. In order to activate the widget, simply long press the home screen on your smartphone and select “Widgets”. Grab the CSBW widget and drag it onto your display and that will complete the look of your Pixelified Android device with the new search bar.
I rarely use custom launchers or icon packs, and it only took me five minutes to install all of these apps and features. The look of the new Pixel launcher is pretty cool and up to date, so try it out if you want the look of the new Pixel devices without the $650 price tag.
