ION Mobile Combines Travel Assistance with Offers and Rewards

Sionic Mobile announced the recent release of their ION Mobile application, giving frequent flier and penny savers a two-for-one app.  Available for Android 2.1 and above (tablets too), ION provides airport maps, travel itineraries, car rental information and a rewards program that ties everything together.  The app can also store your hotel and airline  rewards credentials and a future update will include rental car agencies.

How does it work? In a nutshell, airport shops and restaurants who participate in the ION network reward the users for every offer redeemed.  These “ION points” can ultimately result in food, beverages, and other goodies any other ION merchant.  In other words, stay within the circle of merchants and you’ll constantly be earning and redeeming.

On the day of travel, ION will keep an eye on your flight status, gate changes, and other relevant info so that you don’t miss a thing.  This way you can spend your time worrying about more important stuff, like finding the nearest Starbucks.

As of today, ION provides support for 40 US. airports* with plans to expand into not only additional cities, but into retailers and restaurant chains.  We played with ION for a few minutes and found that the app is best suited for people who fly through Atlanta at this point.  While we found a bunch of popular airports listed, the rewards and deals we encountered were specifically for Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen.  Looking at the screen shots below, however, we’re optimistic that we’ll see additional retailers and restaurants integrated in short order.
