ZTE Trying to Crack US Market with Verizon’s Help

zteZTE, a Chinese company who designs and manufactures telco equipment has set its sights on the US market. The handset maker plans to roll out an Android-based smart phone to multiple carriers around the world, including Verizon Wireless.

“We see big potential in the smartphone market. We are targeting to ship more smartphones in the coming few years, which will help to improve our gross margin.”  – Dale Ying, ZTE‘s managing director of handset business marketing

A relatively unknown name here in the United States, ZTE  owns about 20% market share in terms of global GSM equipment.  There’s plenty of room for more handset makers to get in on the action and make a name for themselves.  It wasn’t that long ago that most of us were clueless as to who HTC was.  Aside from smartphones, the company is says they are is in talks with, and testing for, all four of the Tier 1 providers.
