With Memorial Day less than a week behind us, the clock is ticking for those of you who plan on getting fit and in shape for the summer season. Summer is when we hang out at the pool, tan at the beach, and show off our best bodies while we have them.

Your smartphone, whether it is an iPhone or Android, can be a very powerful tool in helping you get in shape and get you the body you want for summer.

Make a commitment to a better you

Keep in mind, the people who are in shape, like The Rock and Jillian Michaels, work out ridiculously hard, eat as clean as possible, and rest and recover every night. The key to getting fit is making a commitment to taking care of yourself and moving forward in your fitness goals. It’s very easy to lose track of taking care of yourself, but your next choice could be the one that puts you in the right direction. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. If you slip up and eat too much at dessert, run a little harder the next day. Whatever you do, don’t give up and continue to move forward.

You have the power to control what you eat, how much you sleep, and how hard you work out. No one is going to do it for you and you don’t need a gym membership or a personal trainer to get fit. All you need is decent weather, a pair of athletic shoes, the will to put down the chocolate cupcake, and your smartphone.

Download an app that tracks your activity

There are hundreds of fitness apps that track your activity. Experimenting with them can be daunting and frustrating, but take the time to find one you like and make it work for you.

Track your sleep

Sleep is one of the most overlooked activities in staying mentally strong and physically fit. Many of us don’t get enough sleep and also have weird sleep schedules. Why do we need sleep? Sleep is when our bodies rest and recuperate. If you’re tired and groggy, you will probably miss your workout. Get on a regular sleep schedule where you get at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Let your body recover and let your mind relax so you can be strong tomorrow.

During sleep, most systems in an animal are in an anabolic state, building up the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems.

Use Google Calendar to set your schedule

Using a calendar to set a schedule is a great way to remind you to stay on track. Google Calendar is heavily integrated into Android and Google Now which means it will pull information from your calendar and notify you when it is time to workout and eat. Sticking to a routine will help you set your mind in the right direction.

Use your smartphone to call or text a friend or family member for support

Identify the positive people in your life who can help keep you on track. When you get hunger cravings, pick up the phone and call your mom or best friend to distract your mind from the chocolate cake. Changing your lifestyle is not easy, and friends and family are great resources for keeping you moving forward.

Don’t be afraid to use your camera

Weight isn’t always the best measurement for getting in shape. If you’re working out, you might be adding muscle mass which is more dense than fat. So you might be adding muscle while losing fat, and the scale doesn’t tell the whole truth. Every pound of muscle you add increases your metabolism which helps you burn more calories. The best way to check if you’re getting in shape is to take a picture of yourself when you start, and to take another picture every week or two to monitor your progress.

Get a great music playlist to keep your energy high

“Music is like is a legal drug for athletes,” says Costas Karageorghis, Ph.D., from London’s Brunel University School of Sport and Education, one of the world’s leading authorities on music and exercise. “It can reduce the perception of effort significantly and increase endurance by as much as 15 percent.”

Many music apps have playlists already curated for your workouts or exercise sessions.

I happen to love Google Play Music, but Spotify, TIDAL, and Pandora are all great options too.
