Android Around the World: China Mobile’s Dopod G2 Resembles a Certain Fruit Phone

dopod_g2_001Founding Open Handset Alliance member, China Mobile is inching closer to the release date of their first Android handset.  Expected to be called the Dopod G2, it has the HTC Magic form factor on the outside.  The inside? Well that’s a different story.

Customized fairly well, the operating system looks more than a little bit like iPhone.  That’s the cool thing about Android – OEMs and carriers can customize the platform, tweaking and bending it to their liking. In this case, a decision was made to go for the “tile” look.  Anybody see anything Google related on the phone?  Anybody surprised?

dopod_g2_002The phone is set to comply with China’s proprietary TD-SCDMA technology, so those of you trying to sneak one back to the states will lose 3G and WiFi capability.

With 415 million subscribers, China Mobile is the largest phone operator in the world.  Android could rocket out of the gates in terms of market share as there’s no iPhone to contend with over there. Look for a May launch.
