Cook Up a Custom Froyo ROM for Your Captivate or Galaxy S

Cooking your own custom ROM may seem quite complicated at first glance, but this “kitchen” for the international Galaxy S and the Captivate can make your life a lot easier. All that’s involved is choosing the apps, themes and tweaks via a web app, and voil√†, you’ve got your own, fully-cooked Froyo-based ROM.

If you have another U.S. Galaxy S variant, like the Vibrant, Epic 4G or Fascinate, ROMs created with this tool will not work with your phone.

Since pictures are a lot clearer than words, I’ve provided a detailed walk-through. Check it out after the break.

Please Note: Proceed at your own risk. Neither we nor the people providing this Rom Kitchen are responsible if you brick your device. Don’t come knocking at our doors if your device doesn’t boot. Boot loops happen.

To start, visit the RomKitchen site and choose your phone. I used the international Galaxy S version of the kitchen for this walkthrough, but the process is essentially the same for the Captivate.

Just use the standard option on this first screen. Use the full wipe.

Choose the country code. I live in the Netherlands, so I select XEN.
Pick your kernel. I prefer the 'Hardcore's Kernel'
Choose the modem. No advice on this one, just do as you like.
Select the apps you want in your ROM. For the launcher, I recommend Launcher Pro or ADW.Launcher. I'd use the Gingerbread keyboard as well.
Next are tweaks for your ROM. If you don't know what they do, don't include them. It's very possible to brick your device if you don't know what you're doing and mess around with them.
I guess it's clear what the "Themes" tab does. I'm in love with Gingerbread, so I picked the Gingerbread theme.
You can't select a boot animation yet, but it'll be available shortly.
Then, click "Generate," and you'll get this screen.

This is the last screen. You can download and flash the ROM at this point. Don't forget to wipe if you've selected the Wipe ROM.

We’ll assume that if you have a rooted phone you know how to flash a ROM and can take it from here. Enjoy!
