Google saw Amazon’s huge success with the Echo smart speaker and decided to launch its own similar device.
The Google Home is so named due to hope that one day it will be your central hub for answering questions with the Google Assistant, controlling your smart connected devices and appliances, while offering entertainment through music, podcasts and audiobooks all in your home. Google has already won over your mobile experience, and now it’s competing with Amazon to take on your home.
Amazon has well over a year of actual experience in the field with consumers and arguably has an advantage over Google with three smart speakers: The Echo, Echo Dot and Tap, priced at $179.99, $49.99 and $129.99. The Dot is the cheapest of the bunch and offers similar capabilities as its larger sibling minus the built-in 360 speakers. The Tap is unchallenged by Google as it is a portable smart speaker and can be connected to the Amazon ecosystem. The smart speakers can even place orders at Amazon with simple voice commands.
Even though Google is a bit late to the game, it is still ahead of Apple and arguably has the best search capabilities of the bunch. The Google Assistant, which is only found in the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, is the next generation voice assistant, and will be available on the Google Home. It’s also ahead of the Echo since it is connected to Google apps you already use like Calendar, Music, Gmail and Maps.
Imagine waking up in the morning and asking the assistant to read you the traffic report, daily schedule and weather.
With the Home you will be able to tell the assistant to play music, read the news, turn off the lights, and schedule reminders. Many of these features were already with “O.K. Google” and are now even better with the Assistant. It will connect all of your Android devices, from you smartphone, smartwatch, Android Auto and Android TV.
If you’ve pre-ordered the Google home, check your email. The Google Home started shipping today and should arrive within a week depending on your location. For those of you who held off, you can still pre-order the home at Best Buy, Google, Target or Walmart for $129.99. Knowing Google, there will be much in store for this device as it is the future of your connected home.
