We received word of a new instant messaging app called SponTalk. A quick look into the app revealed not only an Android app but also a web service that allows users on different platforms to IM each other for free. Send IMs to your friends on other platforms and they will receive a text message with a link to the web app. Want to IM several friends at once? SponTalk supports group chat with unlimited participants. Thumbs getting tired from chatting on your small phone screen? SponTalk allows users to migrate their chats to other devices, like tablets and computers, and back again if they choose.
The best part in all of this?  Your friends and contacts do not need to have SponTalk installed for you to take advantage.

SponTalk’s app and services are free and their website shows apps are coming soon for iPhone and Blackberry as well as a Java-based app. Users do not have to register to use the service nor do they have to provide an email address or any other personal information. The SponTalk app has a feature to attach location to your chats so that your friends can find you but this feature can be turned off. SponTalk’s website states that they do not collect private information at anytime, ever.
