What is an unlocked phone?

When a phone is “unlocked” that means you can use it with any carrier. You can stick in most any SIM card, set it up and start using it. Most unlocked phones are GSM compatible, which means they can be used on AT&T or T-Mobile networks, or most networks outside of the US. Sprint and Verizon use a CDMA network which is a different technology than most of the globe which is why you will see fewer mid-range and budget level devices for those carriers.

The main benefit of using an unlocked phone is the freedom. Since you own the phone outright, you can choose when and which carrier to use depending on the network. You can even use two SIM cards on certain global GSM phones. Unlocked phones are also easier to use in other countries, so it’s great if you travel a lot. You can pick up a SIM card at your destination and start using it with one of the local carriers.
