Google’s Niantic Labs has launched its latest application, a location-based/augmented-reality game called Ingress. Available as a beta-only game at this time, it is inspired by geocaching and looks to split the world into two factions. See, there’s this strange energy force that is found all over the world and, depending on your view, needs to be stopped or spread.  Are you part of the Resistance or the Enlightened?

Video, details, and links after the break!

This world around you is not what it seems. Our future is at stake, and you must choose a side.

A mysterious energy has been unearthed by a team of scientists in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think. We must control it or it will control us.

“The Enlightened” seek to embrace the power that this energy may bestow upon us.

“The Resistance” struggle to defend, and protect what’s left of our humanity.

If the game looks cool to you and sounds like something that would one of your next faves, it’s for good reason. Ingress is designed by the same internal team that created Field Trip.

Should you feel like taking up the cause, you can sign up for the invite-only beta at the Ingress website. The game itself is already available in the Google Play Store but will not work until you’re given the clearance.
