Motorola will be making a special appearance on today’s season premier of the Oprah Winfrey Show.  Why?  Because they are going to announce the new ruggedized Defy for T-Mobile USA.  That’s why!  According to the press release that has already hit the wires, the scratch and water resistant smart phone will be available in time for your holiday purchases.  A quick primer on the Defy – It will feature a 3.7-inch touch screen, MOTOBLUR, a 5-megapixel camera, and Adobe Flashfor the web browser.  There’s no mention as to what build of Android the phone comes with, but it’s definitely not 2.2 as it would feature the full Flash experience.

Although Motorola doesn’t say it, we are expecting to see the Defy in early November.  Now the question becomes, is the Defy going to be Project Jordan or Project Begonia?

  1. we don’t know what the lead time is for production.

probably 6 weeks from green light to air freight for USA delivery.

that means they aint made yet, ergo me thinks they might fly with 2.2.

why would anyone in their right mind market a 2.1 android in a 2.2 world?

  2. Buy a Motorola today, get no upgrades tomorrow!

I’m still waiting for my quench upgrade. In the mean time, I won’t buy any other Motorola phone…

Not sure why my comment was deleted from here…

  3. I knew this piece of crap was headed to Tmobile when it was first leaked. I’m so annoyed. It seems like who ever makes the bid for Tmobile phones just hangs out with a checklist:
    1. It it outdated at release? check
    2. Is it ugly? check
    3. Will this phone make our current customers want to bang their heads against brick walls and ask “why, for the love of God, why”? check
    4. Is this phone so bad, so useless, that even talking into a tin can would be more fun? check
    FAIL

  4. I don’t like he concept of Motoblur (or frankly any of the vendor add-on skins), so this phone will be more appealing when it is rooted (hopefully). But as far as hardware goes, this phone looks pretty reasonable. The 4 minute youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg_LsHr-aWA&list=QL) shows off the hardware fairly well but is less interesting at the end if you are like me and don’t even want Motoblur. They discuss screen size (3.7 854×480), gorilla glass, reasonably small borders from screen to phone edge, etc. But the real point of this phone is the extra durability. I believe the phone has IP67 compliance, which means it is good in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour. It’s also dust resistant and at least a little shock resistant. I have a GPS like this and it is really nice not to worry about devices when it is raining or any other incliment weather.

I’d think about getting one of these myself if I can get rid of Motoblur. I read somewhere that there is no 720p30 video capture (unlike other Motorolas). That is a bit of a bummer. I hope they continue offering rugged phones as future hardware specs of all phones improve.

    Good luck, Motorola.

  5. Thank God for Samsung who is willing to put a Flagship phone on T-Mobile. I just hope their next one is in time for the holiday season.

Not sure why we can’t get any more vendors to put Top Tier phones on T-Mobile…maybe it’s the deodorant:)

  6. hi i bought a defy from t mobile from usa and came to india but in india, the android market is not opening/supporting. i have tried hell lot things but of no use. plz can anyone suggest me how to operate android service??
