Rovio looks to be taking Angry Birds to new places with a location-based feature named Magic.  Players will use use GPS in specific spots to unlock extra content within their games.

Taking a step up from allowing specific Nokia handsets to unlock extra levels by using NFC and tapping their phone with another compatible Nokia handset, with Magic users will be able to unlock things such as the Mighty Eagle character and compete on a localized leaderboard for each specific location.

Rovio says it won’t incorporate every conceivable location ala Foursquare, but are looking to work with retail partners to feature their locations in the game to bring them more custom and enhance the game play for users. Magic will be rolling out to their various editions later this year, and they have other ideas to incorporate too such as Bump.

We’ve embedded a video below of the author of the source’s interview with Rovio Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka and Ramine Darabiha, product manager for Angry Birds Magic, who are in New York City to talk more about Magic Places.
