spring_design_alexSay hello to Alex, Spring Design’s brand new Android-based ereader!  Featuring a 6” E-Ink electronic paper display (EPD) up top and a 3.5” color LCD display down below,  the device is the first e-book powered by green robots that offers full browser capability over 3G, EVDO/CDMA and GSM.

Android helps support integration between the two displays and aids in preserving battery life.  With full web browsing capability, users can bookmark, search, and view history or visited sites.  There are also security settings built into the device for you worry-warts. Other features in Alex include earphones, speakers, and a removable SD card which will allow for text with multimedia “add on” editions.

This is the start of a whole new experience of reading content on e-books, potentially igniting a whole new industry in multimedia e-book publishing for secondary authors to create supplementary content that is hyper linked to the text. We are bringing life to books with audio, video, and annotations.  This gives readers the ability to fully leverage the resources on the Web, and the tools available in search engines to augment the reading experience. – Dr. Priscilla Lu, CEO of Spring Design.

Alex’s dual-screen gives users the standard ebook reading on the EPD while the LC screen shows dynamic hyperlinked media. This opens thedoor for an entirely new industry for publications to enhance and supplement the text.  The patented screen set up is called the Duet Navigator and was patented back in 2007.  Spring Design has been working with major book stores, newspapers, and other publications over the last few years to help make their vision a reality.  According to the press release, they are “currently in discussion with, and enlisting major content partners and plans to release the Alex device for selected strategic partners by the end of this year.”
