It’s a sad day for Desire users, as HTC has announced that they aren’t able to bring any Gingerbread love to their beloved Sense device. You can read a quote from HTC below, but it basically says that there’s not enough ROM on the device to hold both Gingerbread and HTC Sense efficiently. And they wonder why the majority of Android users don’t like manufacturer UIs.

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

So, if you’re waiting for that OTA update, we’re saddened to tell you it’s not coming. But all hope is not lost. If you really want some Android 2.3 goodness on your Desire, you can root it (at your own risk) and flash one of the many custom ROMs floating around out there. You might want to give CyanogenMod a shot if you’re going down that path.

So, how many of our readers are still rocking a Desire? Upset that you’re not getting your Gingerbread update? Sound off in the comments below or on our Facebook Wall!
