Is This the Next Version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich?

Ok, so bear with us here.  The video you are about to see is alleged to be the first in-the-wild footage of the next release of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.   The story goes like this: A guy buys a Nexus S on eBay.  Handset arrives, but looks a little different when booted up.  Once he goes to the About screen on the device, he learns that it has Ice Cream Sandwich with a build of IRK48 and kernel 3.0.1.

As for what you’ll see, there is definitely a Honeycomb influence on the UI.  The lock screen, recent apps, and general aesthetics look very much like the 3.X stuff we have on tablets.  There’s also a new “Google Apps” launcher which appears to load a window of strictly Google titles and features (Gmail, YouTube, Android Market, etc.)

The launcher now also appears to have four icons across the bottom, double the normal two.  As Engadget rightly points out, this could be the product of a custom ROM however that’s likely not the case.  Whatever the reason or set of circumstances, this looks to be Ice Cream Sandwich.  If it’s not, we hope that it looks a lot like it anyways!

We’ll find out on October 11th as that’s now the date we’ve circled on our calendar.  You should do the same!

We’d also like to know whether or not the operator (T-Mobile) for this phone means anything…
