Doxie Go is a unique type of scanner in that it lets you scan and save your documents while on the go, making them immediately available in multiple capacities.  Moreover, it’s a sheet-fed scanner that allows users to scan photos, receipts, documents, and other items and store them in a variety of manners. Prefer to keep your files stored on a SD card? No problem. Want to put them in the cloud (Evernote, Dropbox, etc) and share with others? Done. Want to wait until you sync up with the PC? Who are we to say no?

In the late 90’s and early 2000’s it seemed like a waste of money to have a manual feed scanner where users would have to insert photos or documents in a one-at-a-time manner. Today, however, it makes much more sense to have something like this around. This is especially so when you consider that it does not require a power outlet and the scanner itself is not much bigger than a paper towel tube.

Those who work for themselves or who file invoices, receipts, and other documents, the Doxie Go is easy to consider. Thanks to its small footprint, this is the sort of thing we take with us when we’re on the road or traveling for work.  It’s simple for us to scan a taxi card or meal receipt and toss it in the cloud. Sure, we could take a picture of some things but chances are we’d lose track of the important stuff in the docs. Doxie Go features optical character recognition (OCR) software and converts things to text so we can search for them later, even in PDF format.

Another advancement in the sheet-fed scanner technology over the last years is in speed. The Doxie Go promises to scan a color photo in about 8 seconds however we found results varied depending on size and resolution. On average, documents only took 10-15 seconds to scan and process.

The Doxie Go features an internal battery so we can juice it up and toss it in the bag and not have to worry about charging while out of town. That said, the the miniUSB port is almost standard today and the cord is nothing to put in the carrying pouch.

There’s enough memory in the Doxie Go to hold around 600 pages or 2400 photos, all of which depends on resolution and size. Thanks to an SD card slot, we can insert whatever additional capacity we need.  Should you not have any external storage at your disposal, the Doxie Go will sync your files the next time you plug it into your desktop computer.

For the best experience, we recommend pairing the scanner with an Eye-Fi wireless expansion card and let it scan to the cloud immediately. Once you’ve got it in Dropbox, Evernote, Flickr, or wherever else, it’s immediately available to you on your Android phone or tablet. Have an iOS device? Doxie Go offers an app that lets you scan directly to your iPhone or iPad.

Features:
  • Doxie Go delivers smart and simple scanning you can take anywhere – no computer required
  • Doxie’s tiny size makes it easy to scan at your desk or on the go – just insert your paper. Scan full color pages in just 8 seconds
  • Scan up to 600 pages (2400 photos) with built-in memory, or insert an SD card or USB flash drive for additional storage
  • Award-winning ABBYY® OCR technology recognizes the text in your document and creates searchable PDFs
  • Doxie 2.0 included: Amazing scanners deserve amazing software. Doxie 2.0 syncs scans, creates multi-page stacks, and sends directly to your favorite apps

What we liked:

  • Internal battery lets us cut the cord and toss in a bag
  • More than enough memory to house an entire business trip worth of receipts and documents
  • Expansion slot for storage gets even better thanks to Eye-Fi support

Room for improvement:

  • Would like a dedicated Android app for scanning directly to our devices
  • Nit-picky, but microUSB instead of miniUSB lets us use our phone’s cable.

Where to buy:

You can purchase the Doxie Go at Doxie’s store for $199.99 or at various online retailers. Amazon is currently offering the scanner for just a couple dollars lower ($196.27) and  we suspect they’ve got better deals on Eye-Fi cards.

  1. You could choose the alternate solution – just buy an inexpensive ScanJig (scanjig.com) and use your smart device to capture images fast with consistent quality

    • Doxie delivers high-resolution crisp, clean scans every time. Essentially, all you’re doing with a device like this is taking a picture. If you’ve ever taken a picture before then you know that getting the best shot is sometimes a challenge, especially with text. What’s more, a clunky stand isn’t really what people are looking for when they are on the go. While taking a picture of a document may work in dire situations, it’s not ideal for someone that is truly serious about going paperless or running a business.
