Today we’re looking at a recently released piece of hardware that provides additional external storage for your Android smartphone or tablet. It’s called the UNUS SMART-X and it comes in a variety of storage capacity options and colors.

unus_smartxIn a nutshell, the SMART-X functions like a flash drive that you can plug into both a microUSB port or traditional USB port. More specifically, one end goes into your computer and the other can plug into your phone. This way, you can easily load a bunch of pictures, videos, music, and other files onto the external unit. Want to move a gallery of birthday pictures from your phone to your mom’s computer? Presto.

The model we tested was a 4GB unit; additional sizes include 8GB, 16GB,and 32GB. Likewise, we used a green model however other colors include black, white, violet, and pink.

There’s essentially no setup to worry about for the SMART-X, just plug it in and your phone recognizes the additional storage. What’s really nice is that you don’t need to mess with installing additional apps or removing your microSD card.

Transfer speeds were as fast as we expected, playing music was no problem and copy/paste was a breeze. As practical as any other flash drive, this one adds flexibility in the microUSB function. I like the small size and portability however I would love to see a keychain loop.

Pricing for the SMART-X breaks down as follows:

  1. I use a micro-USB OTG cable to read standard flash drives on a Galaxy Nexus. They are easy to find for $5-$10. It also supports attaching a USB keyboard or mouse.
