Lasting Impression: As a replacement for the preloaded IM client for Android, this one works well, but leaves us wanting more.

Nitty Gritty: We were excited to get our hands on Meebo for Android as they’ve built up a really great application for desktops.  We hoped it would pick up where the Android IM client leaves off.  Now that we’ve had a chance to play with it for a few days, we’re switching back to the preloaded app.

Don’t get us wrong, the Meebo app works very well.  Like its desktop counterpart, it brings together all of your messaging clients into one. There’s support for simultaneous logins on AIM, Google Talk, MSN, YAHOO!, ICQ, Jabber, and of course, Meebo.

We do like the notification that stays on top of your notification bar, showing the app is running but beyond that it doesn’t serve any purpose that we could find.  The IM app that’s factory loaded with Android will show you notifications as they arrive anyways.

Probably the biggest reason we are switching back to the IM app from Android is the simple fact that we cannot set away messages or set up other options.  Otherwise, this is a great mobile app from Meebo.  It runs smooth and doesn’t seem to slow our G1 down a bit.  Here’s looking forward to an updated release.
