T-Mobile named John Legere as the new CEO of T-Mobile USA, effective September 22nd. A 32-year veteran of the telecommunications and technology industries, Legere previously served as CEO of Global Crossing, where he led the company’s transformation into a major IP services provider. He succeeded Jim Alling, who had served as interim CEO since June and returned to his role as COO.
Legere’s appointment came at a critical point for T-Mobile, which had long sat at #4 among US carriers and was in the process of expanding LTE service and repositioning against the other major carriers. Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann cited Legere’s experience at Global Crossing and Dell — where he led European and Asia-Pacific operations — as directly applicable to T-Mobile’s network and competitive challenges ahead.
